IBP Makati Academic Symposium : West Philippine Sea

Last 22 September 2017, the IBP Makati Chapter held an academic symposium entitled “Preservation of Philippine Sovereignty Rights in the West Philippine Sea After the Arbitral Award”, at the Turf Room of the Manila Polo Club. Lawyers from the various member firms, as well as young law students from several prominent universities, filled the Turf Room to listen to the presentation. Also gracing the event were IBP National President, Atty. Abdiel Dan Elijah S. Fajardo, and Governor for the IBP Southern Luzon Region, Atty. Sixto Antonio.

Presiding over the symposium was none other than Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio, who was instrumental in the planning, strategizing, and successful implementation of the Philippine government’s decision to institute arbitration proceedings against China regarding the dispute in the West Philippine Sea. Justice Carpio enthralled the participants with his meticulous and easily understandable presentation, highlighting both the points addressed by the arbitral award, as well as the challenges still facing the country in the continuing dispute with China. A short open forum followed the presentation.

The symposium was the first in a series of lectures and forums to be held by the Chapter on various legal issues and topics meriting discussion and study. The Chapter looks forward to these future events, which promise equally relevant and interesting discussions.
