IBP Makati Chapter Joins National Legal Aid Summit in Boracay

On 19 to 21 May 2017, delegates of all IBP Chapters gathered at the Hennan Regency Resort in Boracay Island, Aklan for the IBP’s National Legal Aid Summit.

Representing the IBP Makati Chapter were its Treasurer, Atty. Carlos Paulo M. Villaruz, Legal Aid Committee member, Atty. Vincent Patrick R. Cruz and the Chapter’s Legal Aid Clerks, Mesdames May Oprenario and Arlene Castro.

The first day of the summit was highlighted by the presentation of the Revised Guidelines on the Liquidation of IBP Subsidy by the National Director of the National Center for Legal Aid, Atty. Jonas Florentino D.L. Cabochan, and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the IBP and the Social Security System, represented by its Chairman, Dean Amado D. Valdez, and President/CEO, Atty. Emmanuel F. Dooc. Said MOA aims to encourage all self-employed lawyers to voluntarily contribute to the SSS and reap the benefits it provides.

The next morning, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Mariano Del Castillo, delivered a report on the Supreme Court’s initiatives on the legal aid program, particularly on the proposed Mandatory Legal Aid Service for new lawyers. The rest of the afternoon saw the delegates break into workshop groups to prepare a SWOT analysis on the current state of their legal aid programs and the crafting of a vision-mission statement and brand which were then presented before the plenary.

The IBP Makati Chapter congratulates the IBP National Office for the successful holding of the summit and for living up to its theme of “Innovating and Transforming the Future of the IBP Legal Aid Program.”
